A judge in Mexico on Wednesday declared missionary pilot John Van Wormer free of all charges, and the plane he was flying is expected to be returned soon.
Mexican authorities detained John on Sept. 8 after he landed at an allegedly closed airstrip in northern Mexico, and seized the plane he was flying. John was later charged with flying without a flight plan, and on Sept. 11 was freed on bail.
New Tribes Mission, of which John is a member, and UIM International-Aviation, for which John was flying, strive to respect the laws of the country. The organizations, which help indigenous people in Mexico, contended that John did not need a flight plan and provided statements to that effect over the weekend.
On Wednesday, the judge in the case agreed and declared John free of charges. He also said the plane was to be released. It will take a few days to finalize the paperwork.
Thank the Lord with us for this answer to prayer. New Tribes Mission appreciates the many who prayed, and the help of the church in Mexico.
Thank you so much for praying, God is good.

Dear Friends,
Please pray for John Van Wormer. Here is an e-mail from our office that I just recieved.

Dear UIM Family,
John Van Wormer who is on loan with UIM with New Tribes flew into a small village in Mexico near Chihuahua yesterday. While he was there men from the Mexico Federal Attorney's office apprehended him and began to harrass him. They have confiscated the UIM airplane he was flying and have transported him to Hermosillo. This morning, Tim Ried and Kevin Dunn along with two New Tribes representatives have begun the four hour journey from Tuscan to Hermosillo to speak to the authorities to get his release. Please be in fervent prayer for John's safety as he awaits the arrival of the men and that he will be given favor among those who are in authority at the Federal Attorney's office.

The detention of missionary pilot John Van Wormer appears likely to end soon. The case has yet to be resolved, however, so please continue praying.
New Tribes Mission, with aviation assistance from UIM International-Aviation, helps indigenous people in the mountains of Mexico. Because of the activities of drug traffickers, Mexican authorities monitor these areas.
On Monday, Mexican federal investigators detained John Van Wormer in order to check his documentation after he allegedly landed on a recently closed airstrip. The authorities were diligently doing their jobs.
As guests in Mexico, we respect the laws there and the people who enforce those laws. So NTM and UIM strive to keep all papers up to date and to register activities such as flights with the government. The presence of our personnel and their activities are carried out with the knowledge and approval of the appropriate Mexican authorities.
In a hearing Thursday afternoon, bail for John was set at 15,000 pesos (roughly $1,400). NTM and UIM representatives expect to soon post bail so John can be released from custody.
Thank you for praying,
Tim Woodring

We are pleased to report that John Van Wormer is spending tonight at home with his family. He was released from custody last night after our lawyer was able to arrange for us to post a bail bond with the court.
New Tribes Missionary, John Van Wormer flying with UIM Aviation and the airplane shown to the right were detained Monday by Mexican authorities. He was charged with landing at a closed airstrip.
This action by the Mexican authorities is puzzling considering we have flown in and out of this airstrip several times each month for over 30 years partnering with Ron Hamilton and United Missionary Fellowship (UMF). We are speculating that this may be an effort by authorities to clamp down on criminal elements who also use many of Mexico’s remote airstrips.
During this week, at least 20 people have been working virtually day and night trying to secure John’s release and to resolve the situation. Staff members from UIM, NTM, and UMF have all been working together at several locations with government officials, lawyers, and other in this effort.
Please continue to pray. The situation has not been resolved. The charges are still pending and the legal process continues. Our airplane is still impounded and under guard. Tomorrow, John will have to make the 300 mile trip back to Hermosillo for another hearing. We are unsure what the legal process will be or how long it will take.
1.Pray that we can find a commercial airplane to get John there by the hearing time (our flight activities are suspended until this is resolved.)
2.Pray for complete exoneration of all charges against John.
3.Pray for release of our airplane and it’s return to us.
4.Pray for a way for us to continue to provide flight services for the missionaries in Mexico. Without complete exoneration and return of our airplane, it will probably not be possible for us to continue to serve.
5.Pray for the type of authorization which will permit us to use the remote airstrips that the government seems to be closing. 90% of our flying is to this type of airstrip. It is where the native people live and where most of the missionaries are working.
6.Pray for the larger, unseen spiritual battle taking place as Satan wants to hinder God’s work in Mexico.
For the latest information about this situation, you can go to NTM’s web site atwww.ntm.org.
Please continue to keep this situation in your prayers.

We thought that the problem was over when the judge declared Joyn Van Wormer innocent until the prosecution wants an appeal.
Pray that this will be over soon so that the mission can fly into the villages that need Christ.
Tim Woodring
On Wednesday the judge declared John VanWormer innocent and that our airplane be returned. The next day the prosecution indicated that they would appeal for a new trial, a process that is allowed in that country. Our team is headed back to Hermosillo where John must sign paper work from the first trial.
We are still in an area of unknowns. Please keep praying.
